One of the earliest recorded instances dates back to the 4th century with Saint Anthony the Great, considered a pioneer of monasticism. His biographers describe episodes where he appeared to float during spiritual ecstasies. Later, in the Middle Ages, saints like Saint Joseph of Cupertino became famous for their reported levitations during prayer or mass, which were often witnessed by crowds and documented by contemporaries.
These phenomena were interpreted by believers as tangible signs of divine presence, emphasizing the saint’s close communion with God. While skeptics view such accounts as religious legend or poetic symbolism, many within the Catholic tradition see levitation as a testament to the transformative power of faith and prayer.
Today, stories of levitating saints continue to inspire devotion and curiosity. Whether viewed as literal miracles or spiritual symbols, they remain a fascinating aspect of the rich tapestry of Catholic mysticism and sainthood.
